When ‘No’ Isn’t Good Enough

Recruiter:
'Hello, I'm calling to see if you've got any feedback for Matthew Thomas, he attended an interview with you 10 days ago'.

Client:
'Matthew who? Oh, right Uuuummm, he's a no…..'

If this never ever happens in your organisation then please stop reading now!
If it is sounds just a teeny bit familiar maybe you should read on….

Recruitment Consultants know this scenario only too well, and we are left with the unenviable task of calling the candidate (who has been sitting anxiously on the end of the phone for the last ten days) just to say 'Sorry you're a NO'
What kind of impression does this leave? Imagine that you have interviewed three candidates for a key role in your department. You invited two of them back for a lengthy second interview and you've put them through a technical test and competency interview with HR. The candidates have spent about five hours of their time in your office and probably spent a fair bit of their hard earned cash. You've just offered the job to candidate number one and now candidate number two is a 'NO'.
Just think… this candidate must have been pretty good otherwise you wouldn't have invited them back for a second interview and spent so much time with them. In fact they might be so good that there could be another job for them in your business, maybe not now but later. PLUS they are a human being and have invested a lot of time with you and now you owe them an explanation. Here's how to do it properly.

'We thought Matthew was a really strong candidate. We were extremely impressed with his excellent technical skills, he also communicated very effectively and provided first class, recent examples of his work on projects that were relevant to the role. He also demonstrated that he had taken considerable trouble to study our web site and understand our business. Unfortunately most of Matthew's experience has been in the UK and we are looking for a candidate with a little more international experience on larger scale projects. Matthew has a great future ahead of him and we wish well in his future career….'

What would that say about you and your company? Much more than just a no.

Think about it!
