Head of Finance for Voluntary Organisation

The client

People Can (formerly Novas Scarman Group) is a voluntary organisation in England and Wales which provides services, activities and products which empower service users and communities to change their lives for the better. Their service includes personalised support services, community development work, social enterprise and programmes which increase employability.

THE CHALLENGE

After employing a number of interims consecutively to temporarily fill the role of head of finance, People Can felt the timing was right to begin the hunt for a permanent post holder. The unique nature of charity organisations meant that simply finding a candidate of high calibre would not be enough. Instead, they needed an incredibly commercially savvy individual who could hit the ground running to gain an in-depth understanding of the unique challenges they faced as an organisation. Cultural fit for stability was also paramount in leading their business forward.

Hudson had successfully placed a HR Director with Novas Scarman a few years earlier, and due to the strength of the relationship they had built, and as such, she had approached Hudson about the head of finance role.

OUR SOLUTION

Hudson met face to face with People Can prior to the start of the recruitment process to ensure the best possible understanding of the role, the softer skills required and the needs and visions of the existing management team. Rather than simply being a service provider, Hudson Accounting & Finance acted as an extension of People Can’s management team.

Hudson Accounting & Finance managed the entire recruitment process throughout. The team recommended an integrated advertising solution that went outside of the standard publications to generate the strongest possible pool of candidates. Nearly 90 candidates applied to the initial advertisements which were placed on various niche and wider capturing online sites.

Hudson then pre-screened and conducted face-to-face interviews within a tight framework of stringent key criteria. Explored in detail were the candidates’ motivation for wanting to work within the not for profit sector, and their nous for being a strong commercial finance professional. Employing competency based techniques, Hudson Accounting & Finance then interviewed the shortlist of six with the chief executive, director of corporate services and head of quality & performance, and then conducted further interviews on the final two candidates on-site again with the client.

THE RESULT

As Hudson Accounting & Finance partnered with People Can throughout the whole process, the match and calibre of the candidates shortlisted was extremely promising. After such thorough interviewing, the organisation was able to feel 100% confident that they had the best candidate possible. As such, they offered, and the candidate accepted, and has since had a huge impact on their business.
