Global Internal Communications Practitioner Recruited for Standard Life

The Client

Established in 1825, Standard Life is a leading provider of long term savings and investments to around 6 million customers worldwide.  Headquartered in Edinburgh, Standard Life has around 9,000 employees internationally.


Standard Life was looking to recruit a global head of internal communications. This was a newly created position to develop and implement a global internal communications strategy in line with the group business strategy. A senior role, the position required global internal communications and board level experience.

The Marketing & Communications team at Hudson has worked in partnership with Standard Life over the last few years. The team has established a solid client relationship and has a proven track record for recruitment, for a number of different roles across all levels. We agreed to carry out a UK-wide search to find a candidate with the right level of internal and change communications experience.


An independent mapping company provided initial research, and we then worked in partnership to carry out the candidate approach and selection. This two pronged approach would make best use of Hudson’s expertise and networks in the market. It also ensured that the widest selection of candidates would be included in the search.

Once we had a list of target organisations and individuals we made the initial approach. We created a position profile to be used as the candidate briefing document and effectively “sell” the opportunity at Standard Life.

In total we had a long list of 11 candidates to interview across the UK. This included candidates from the mapping company’s search as well as additional candidates from our own networks in Scotland.

Six candidates were shortlisted and presented to Standard Life. For each short listed candidate we provided a full interview report to cover motivations, technical experience and scoring on the key competencies. From the short list four candidates were selected for interview and an offer was made to the successful candidate after a three stage interview process.


The key requirement for the client was to recruit a high calibre individual with the right level of global internal communications and board level experience. The recruitment methodologies used and our specialist knowledge of the communications industry gave the client the confidence that the market had been effectively covered and the best candidates short listed for the role. Standard Life were satisfied as a result to offer the position to the successful candidate.

With our knowledge and track record of delivery at Standard Life, we were able to sell the opportunity to both active and passive candidates which ensured we attracted the best talent to the position.
