The 5 do's and 5 don'ts of the job interview

Job interviews are never easy.

For every opportunity to show your worth in the interview room, there's also a banana skin just waiting to be slipped on.

Here are 5 do's and 5 don'ts that might just be the difference between a rejection email and a job offer...

Do: Get comfortable

Save the brand new outfit for another day - stick to something smart you've worn before and know is comfortable!

Don't: Be flashy

Statement jewellery or too much aftershave can be distracting for the interviewer.

Do: Use notes

Don't be afraid to bring some extra material to help prompt you - it's an interview, not a memory test.

Don't: Forget your body language

Remember: sit up straight, keep both feet on the floor and never cross your arms.

Do: Listen!

Don't just wait to speak - a good interview is a real conversation.

Don't: Ramble

Go slow and cover one point at a time. Think clearly about when and how each sentence is going to end and stick to it.

Do: Ask questions

Ask questions when it's relevant, and always have some prepared for the finish of the interviewer.

Don't: Play games

Don't try to throw any curveballs or assert your authority. Let the interviewer call the shots.

Do: Say thank you

Remember, they're taking time out of their day to speak with you. It's only polite!

Don't: Read a script

Bring notes by all means, but don't stick too tightly to a pre-rehearsed idea of what you think the interview wants to hear.
